I LOVE experts – and you ?
One of the things I love about my job is meeting and working with people who are experts at what they do – and then my expertise is to visually show the world what they do – and that they are experts in their field! As you probably know, the way I do that is through imagery – whether photography or video – both have their different ways of communicating.
The real experts are those who know what they are good at – and that they can’t be experts at everything. I put myself in this group, as I have learnt to do what I am good at and then I get the experts in to do the rest – it’s a no-brainer – especially when it comes to one of the most important aspects of running a business – communicating what a business actually offers – and not wasting time trying to do it yourself. What’s the point of offering a great service or product if nobody knows it’s great?
What is so different now (to when I started in this business 30 years ago this year – watch the video at the end of this post for more on this!) is that it was only large businesses with a large budget who could afford my services – clients such as Nissan, Renault, Siemens, Sanyo and various government agencies. With advances in technology I can now offer these services to smaller businesses – which I actually find much more rewarding!
So I was thrilled when, last week – through a Facebook referral, I was contacted by an expert – Sophie Edme of ‘Sophie’s Barn’ fame – who makes handmade, natural soap, bath infusions and other skincare products from her workshop in SW France. Sophie had decided she wanted to ‘up her game’ and get a pro in to take photos of her beautiful products, instead of doing them herself, as she had in the past.
We decided to set up a temporary studio in her workshop at ‘Sophie’s Barn, to see how we worked together there and to save having to transport everything to my studio – about 40 minutes away. However, now that we know how each other work – and I know what Sophie is looking for – future shoots will be at my studio where time will be less of an issue and it’s a more controllable situation. We worked solidly the whole afternoon resulting in a full and pleasing range of photos – both ‘pack shots’ and lifestyle photos – some of which you can see below.
What I also found out while working with Sophie (having previously known nothing about soaps) is how important it is to use natural soaps. Sophie really knows her stuff and is so passionate about what she does that we got talking about producing a video – or maybe even a series.
Why? Because of this heartfelt passion that she has (that you can’t get across with just a good photo of a beautiful soap – or some well written text on a website) – and because I know I can catch that passion on a video camera – despite her fear (common to so many of us) of being on camera! 😉
I know (again, from 30 years of expertise) that professional video marketing will transform Sophie’s business. It’s not just the fact that:
- Approximately 100 million internet users watch online video every day or that
- People are 64% more likely to buy a product on an online retail website after watching a video about it or
- Even 59% of senior executives would prefer to watch a video than read a whitepaper or brochure . . .
. . .it’s because people like working with people – they like to see the expert who is behind the business – don’t you? Just another fact! 😉
